I came to skating late in life…. It came to me much earlier in the form of many many nights up late watching the winter Olympics (the only skating shown on tv here in Australia) as a child. Growing up in a country town, there was no ice rink, so I roller skated until I “grew out of it”.
On becoming a teacher, I moved to the city to take up my first teaching post. I worked, studied, got married, had 4 kids, worked and studied some more. Eventually I realised I lived 5 minutes from an ice rink, when I had to take my daughter there for a party. I got on and had a go. The rest, as they say, is history!
The following week I bought skates and signed up for lessons with a coach, determined not to quit after spending so much money! Time for some ‘me time’.
4 years later, I am still loving my ‘new’ hobby. I am amazed at how much I’ve learned, and how it makes me feel to fly around the rink. I think one of the best parts has been meeting other like minded grown ups who understand…. This blog is for anyone else out there who needs an adult skater’s perspective on the sport we love.
